About Us

Friends in Recovery is an organization dedicated to bringing fun to recovery

Friends in Recovery truly feels that alcoholism is a family disease, and that together, it is possible for families to get well. Our goal is to offer clean and sober fun to the recovering family. We encourage family and friends to participate and support one another in our journey to serenity. We are a group of individuals and families that have discovered that having fun is essential to maintaining quality sobriety. To that end, we have a lot of fun by involving our families and friends in enjoyable activities during all seasons of the year. Our activities include: Snow Tubing, Banquets, Golf, Dances, Boat Cruises, Tailgate Parties, Bowling, Bonfires and Hayrides, and a hospitality suite at Gopher State Roundup. Recovery is meant to be enjoyed and celebrated, not endured!

History

Friends In Recovery officially began in 1990.  In 1972, we began as St. John’s alumni.  In 1986 St. John’s Hospital closed and we went scrambling for a meeting room.  For a time we met at Mounds Park Hospital, and then they closed.  We held open meetings at Betheseda Hospital, and yes they too closed.  Drunks often times get thrown out of places, but usually they don’t close down the establishment!  In 1990 we moved to St. Joseph’s Hospital and changed our name from St. John’s Alumni to Friends In Recovery.  St. Joseph’s Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota, remains our home today. We have been going strong for 37 years
